How to become a Registered Personal Assistant

The Approved Personal Assistant Register run by ENRYCH Berkshire seeks Personal Assistants (PAs) on an ongoing basis.

A Personal Assistant can be employed by adults with disabilities or long term conditions to support them to live as independently as possible. Tasks are varied and could include personal care, food preparation, shopping, providing practical support or supporting the person to access the community.

The process to become a registered Personal Assistant leads to introductions to potential employers.

To start, prospective PAs are invited to an information exchange  meeting with our PA Coordinators. If you are still interested in becoming a PA, you will need to complete an application form. The next stage is to bring in the completed PA application form to the office together with two references, and proof of your identity, home address and eligibility to work in the UK. If these documents are acceptable, you will also have to commit to our code of conduct for standards in care, and pay a registration fee of £5 before you can start the online training process. Please note that this registration fee is non-refundable once online training has started.

You will then be given login and password details to be able to undertake the online e-training (through Reading Borough Council) in areas such as the principles of care and safeguarding vulnerable adults. Courses take at least 1 hour each. There are 10 learning standards to meet. Equivalent prior training in social care may at our discretion be offset against the online training (conditions apply).

You will need to be able to pass all of the online courses within 4 weeks. You will work on your own computer and at times that suit you. Experience is helpful but not essential. Ideally you will reach the Approved PA Register within two months of being accepted onto the project.

Approved PAs will receive vacancy details of Clients who want to employ a PA directly, and can choose whether to apply. The Client decides whether to interview and employ you. Duties and working hours will be set by each Client. Contracts may be permanent or temporary (for example, holiday cover). Vacancies are part-time, however PAs can work for more than one Client and the development of our service to self-funding Clients may offer longer shifts in future. ENRYCH Berkshire is not an agency and cannot guarantee employment by one of our Clients.

All Clients will be advised to carry out Disclosure and Barring Service clearance before employing a PA.
